The history of Landini

Landini is the tractor maker that stopped making its own engines, and kept making its own crawlers.

The L series went into production in 1950 — the L25 and L45, then the L35 and L55 — and the L25 became the most popular and most widely used tractor model in Italy through the decade.

In 1957 Landini signed an agreement with Perkins Engines of Peterborough to build the English diesels in Italy. From then on the whole Landini range ran on them, which is why a Landini of this period is a British engine in an Italian tractor.

The first Landini crawler, the C35, came in 1959, and our source credits the firm with market leadership in small and medium agricultural crawlers ever since. In 1977 the Large series arrived: the first European tractor over 100 hp with standard architecture, four-wheel drive and a suspended operator platform.

In February 1994 the Morra family took a majority stake through the finance company ARGO S.p.A. The company got fresh capital and a programme to renew both production and distribution, and the effect showed quickly — annual production at Fabbrico passed 13,000 for the first time in 1995, 14,057 including the units from S. Martino. In 1996 demand for the Legend range was heavy enough that the historic number 2 line at Fabbrico was demolished and replaced, while a new plant for machining, gear production and prototype components went up at S. Martino in six months.

In 2018 a joint venture with Anadolu was set up to build tractors in Turkey, aimed at regions with fewer emissions requirements for engines or none at all, starting at roughly 50 to 75 hp.
