Using the site

You may read, search, print and share any page here. No account, no sign-up, no payment. You may quote figures in a forum post, a valuation, a workshop note, a classified advert or a piece of journalism, and you do not need to ask us first.

Re-using the data: CC BY-SA 4.0

The compiled specification data on this site is published under theCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence. Much of it derives from CC BY-SA sources, so share-alike is not a choice we are making; it is a condition we inherited and pass on.

You may copy, adapt and redistribute it, including commercially, provided you:

• credit WhichTractor and link to the page the data came from;
• keep the original sources credited where we credit them — the licences on our sources require it of you as they do of us;
• license anything you build on it under CC BY-SA 4.0 as well; and
• do not suggest we endorse you or your use.

Where a page names its own source and licence, that source's terms govern that material and they come first. Oursources and licences page lists every work we use.

What the open licence does not cover

So that the permission above is usable rather than a trap, here is what it is not. These are reserved, and re-use needs our written permission:

• The generated illustrations. Every render on this site is a drawing produced from the specification record and is captioned Illustration — not a photograph. It is not a photograph of a machine, carries no manufacturer's emblem, wordmark or model lettering, and must never be presented as a photograph or used to represent a real machine for sale.
• The vector drawings and dimension diagrams.
• The site design, layout, typography and code.
• The name WhichTractor and the logo.
• Photographs. These are licensed from their photographers, usually through Wikimedia Commons. Each carries its own licence and credit beneath it, and that licence — not ours — is what governs it.

Manufacturer names and model designations are the trade marks of their owners. They appear here to identify the machines described. WhichTractor is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a dealer for any manufacturer.

The database right

Separately from the licence on the contents, the database itself is protected by the sui generis database right in the United Kingdom and the European Union. That right exists because of the investment in obtaining, verifying and presenting this data: reconciling figures that disagree, separating power measured at the shaft from power claimed in a brochure, dating a livery to a period, recording which source said what and when we read it. We keep the records that evidence that investment.

It means you may not extract or re-use a substantial part of the database, or repeatedly extract insubstantial parts amounting to the same thing, except under the CC BY-SA licence above and on its conditions. Reading pages, quoting figures and re-using data with attribution and share-alike are all fine. Copying the database to publish a competing specification service without attribution and without share-alike is not.

Automated collection

We are a crawler ourselves, so this section states limits rather than pretending automated reading can be forbidden. The rules below are the ones we hold our own fetcher to on other people's sites.

Allowed

• Search engine and AI crawlers, on the terms in our robots.txt. We do not block AI crawlers.
• Automated reading at no more than 1 request every 2 seconds, identifying itself honestly with a user agent naming your project and a contact address.
• Any use of the data collected that keeps to the CC BY-SA 4.0 conditions above.

Not allowed

• Ignoring robots.txt, or requesting paths it disallows.
• Circumventing a technical limit: rotating IP addresses, proxies or user agents to get past our rate limiting, solving or evading a bot challenge, or continuing after a block. Our rate limiting is published so that "the limit was evaded" is a fact and not an opinion. This is the restriction we will act on.
• Impersonating a browser, a person, a search engine or WhichTractor itself.
• Re-publishing a substantial part of the database without the attribution and share-alike the licence requires.
• Anything that degrades the service for other readers.

If you want a bulk copy of the data, ask: corrections@whichtractor.com. A copy handed over is cheaper for both of us than a crawl, and we would rather give you one.

If something here is wrong

Tell us and we will fix it. Send a correction — a figure with the page it is on, and the source you have, is enough. If you own a source we cite and you want us to stop using it, emailbot@whichtractor.com: we stop the same day and remove the facts at the next publish.

Changes, and the law that applies

We may change these terms. The date at the top of this page is when the current version took effect, and material changes will be summarised here rather than made quietly. Continuing to use the site after that date means the new terms apply to you.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have non-exclusive jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, this does not take away rights you have under the law of the country you live in.

If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands.
