The history of Claas

Claas spent eighty-four years as a harvesting company before it built a tractor of its own.

August Claas founded the firm at Clarholz in Westphalia in 1913, and in 1914 August, Bernhard and Franz Claas founded Gebr. Claas. The Huckepack of 1956 was an implement carrier onto which a combine harvester could be mounted. Two acquisitions followed: the farm machinery maker Bautz in 1969, which had itself built tractors until the early 1960s, and in 1970 Speiser's farm machinery division, which brought the Jaguar forage harvester with it.

The first Claas tractor was the Xerion, in 1997. From 1999 a cooperation with Caterpillar had Claas marketing the Caterpillar Challenger tractors in Europe under its own name, and in 2000 the firm set up its first South American sales company, in the Argentine province of Santa Fé.

The full tractor range came by purchase. Taking 51% of the French manufacturer Renault Agriculture in 2003 allowed Claas to offer a complete programme for the first time, and the tractor works was taken over entirely in 2008. Alongside that, from 2005, Claas sold all-wheel telehandlers built with Kramer; in 2017 it announced it would work with Liebherr on those instead.
